Hello again,
A frosty morning at Dead Horse Ranch (-4C outside, +5 or 6 inside). With our gear that is comfortable... until you need to get out of the sleeping bag. The high desert is not in spring mode as we saw in Tucson and Phoenix (that is catch-up material, stay tuned). The folks down there were quite concerned that we were travelling to Cottonwood to camp, because of the cold front moving in.
I talked to a fellow camper this morning who looked at our plates and remarked that this was probably not the coldest we’d seen. He said that if he had a second pair of thermal trousers he would be wearing those too. In contrast was the cyclist/tent camper in the site next to us who strolled out from the shower building barefoot and with wet hair, smiling and happy. It’s all relative.
A morning drive took us to Jerome, a mining town carved from the mountainside like something from a storybook. The Main Street is a switchback. Back down the hill and on to Sedona and the amazing red rock formations. I only have one pic on my phone from the very fine cafe in the Creekside plaza:
Look closely and you’ll find the moon. It’s just over half and I think this is the first time I’ve watched the moon so closely for this many nights in a row.
I’ll have many more photos of this beautiful Red Rock area when I get on a better connection and can upload from the Nikon. I think the linear nature of this story will now end.
Tomorrow we will visit cliff dwellings at Montezuma National Monument as we make our way North. My next post may be from Grand Canyon National Park.
stay calm,
j
